If you car is due an MOT soon you had better check the state of your headlights. Cloudy or foggy headlights can reduce the effectiveness of the light that is emitted form the car, and if a clear pattern cannot be obtained during the test, it is highly likely that you will be in possession of an MOT failure certificate.
Before panic sets in, and it certainly will if you Google prices for replacement headlights there is fortunately and easy solution.
There are many suggestions online and they are of course well meaning solutions but some will just be a total waste of time and worse still some will, like I found out to my cost, make the situation worse by scratching the plastic lenses.
So ignore all the toothpaste options and instead I suggest trying the Autoglym Headlight Restoration Kit.
The kit costs about £21 GBP and comes pads with various grades of coarseness. You will need a drill as the kit comes with an attachment that you connect to the drill. The pads affix to the drill attachment by way of a Velcro backing. The drill rotates at speeds much faster than you could ever achieve by hand which is in truth the reason why this works.
You start with the roughest pads and move down ending with a polishing pad. The job takes about 30-40 mins per headlight depending upon the severity of the damage. It is vital to follow the instructions. It really does work if you follow the instructions, don’t be tempted to rush.
Once completed, I was very impressed with the results, even the guys at the MOT station asked how I got them so clean.
The Kits are available online and of course at Halfords in the UK.
